The Bertha Justice Initiative strengthens human rights and movement lawyering in pursuit of social justice.

Bertha Justice Partners are a global network of law centers who host, train and mentor early-career lawyers. Known as the Bertha Justice Fellows, these lawyers work to hold governments and corporations to account alongside impacted communities.

The Initiative is driven by the collaborative actions of the Bertha Justice Partners, Bertha Justice Fellows and the broader Network.

Bertha Justice Partners are law centers that work alongside communities,
social movements, individuals and other organizations to defend and promote
social justice. Partners work on a range of issues responding to existing and
arising human rights violations, seeking justice by holding governments and
corporations to account.

Partners engage with marginalized communities and movements to provide
legal advice and training. Based in over 20 countries, they are often part of
national and international advocacy and litigation efforts addressing systemic
injustices for long-term social change.

Bertha Justice Fellowships

*For security reasons, not all Fellows are included

Training emerging social justice and movement lawyers
through two-year Fellowships hosted by Bertha Justice
Partners.

Bertha Justice Fellows are early-career lawyers passionate about social justice. They receive practical training from experienced professionals while working on groundbreaking litigation, investigations, legal research and advocacy. Integral to the Fellow’s experience is  working alongside communities and movements. Overall the Fellows develop essential skills, knowledge and networks that can be sustained beyond their Fellowship term.

At any one time, Bertha is funding around 80 Fellowships at 20 partner organizations spanning 19 countries. We have 279 Bertha Justice Alumnx and 77 Fellows to date, all featured on the interactive map above. This brings us to a total of 356 Bertha Justice Fellows and Alumnx across the Bertha Justice Network. Our aim is to train 1000 social justice and movement lawyers over the next 10 years.

Convenings are unique spaces for inspiration, knowledge exchange and generating creative approaches to casework and solidarity actions.

  • Community Exchanges

Community Exchange webinars encourage solidarity actions among Fellows across the Network by providing an avenue for Fellows to come together to share, learn and exchange.

  • Project Funding

Bertha Justice Partners, Fellows and Alumnx can use project funding to power co-created collaborative work and initiatives.

  • Trainings and Network Building

The Bertha Justice Initiative provides training and mentorship for the Fellows throughout their two-year Fellowship.

Solidarity Actions

From time to time some Partner organizations are in crisis, or have successes that
should have global attention as a matter of principle or strategy. We work to raise
the profile of these issues through the solidarity and strength of our network.
